Writing Log | Week 14
Day 1 — Sunday
Goal for the week: finish re-reading the MMC chapters that need major rewrites, then dive into actual edits!
Was way more productive than I thought I’d be, and I’m feeling energized going into the rewrites. I wrapped up with my reread and the latter half of the MMC’s journey is crystal clear to me now.
Day 2 — Monday
Editing a bit before bed! Went through chapter 1 today, made a few tweaks, and OH MY am I excited.
I decided to leave a couple of notes to return to — I think I’ll take this edit in two sprints: the first one messy, the second one refined. I need to plot everything out on the page and then go in and weave some details after I’ve gotten the “clutter” of the necessary rewrites out of the way.
Day 3 — Tuesday
Travel day — no writing done!
Day 4 — Wednesday
Busy busy day over here, and I’ve got to admit: I’ve barely thought about my book. Tomorrow’s another day, though.
Day 5 — Thursday
Sat down to edit before calling it a night. I went through a bit of chapter 2 and made some small tweaks. More tomorrow there!
I’m toying with the idea of making an editing spreadsheet like I did about a year ago for my last draft… I think I’d prefer not to, so that my Enneagram 1 self doesn’t take over and seek the dopamine hit of checking the “done” box. I’d rather take this more casually and let some chapters sit in peace without feeling an urgency to be as efficient as possible.
Day 6 — Friday
Back to Chapter 2! I put on my Manuscript Playlist (which somehow I’d forgotten about) and it’s setting the tone perfectly.
Oooh I love this chapter. Last time I added this bit that I forgot about and am so happy with:
…a rush of emotions that were not my own surged through my heart. Rage light lightning, regret like rain. The booming roar of a thunderous heartache, drowning out all my senses.
Finding “surprises” in your own draft is one of the joys of writing. I’m wrapping up work for the night on this high note, and all done with Chapter 2!
Day 7 — Saturday
Working on Chapter 3 during my son’s afternoon nap!
I wove in a bit of the major backstory arc details, but there’s not much to change in this chapter otherwise. Chapter 3 is hardly a time to info dump — especially when the two POV characters are first meeting each other… we have more important things to focus on there. Their relationship is the beating heart of this story, and those are some of my favorite scenes to write.
Despite taking two days off this week, I’m quite happy with my progress! Three chapters down, something like forty to go…
