Book Recommendation: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin was one of my “4 Before 2024” books, and it did not disappoint. This post is mostly spoiler-free, but if you want to go into this book blind then stop reading here!

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, in a nutshell, is about Sam and Sadie, two friends who create bestselling video games. It’s an origin story about the wild success of creative people, but more than that, it’s a love story where the love that takes center stage is not romantic.

This element in particular made me supremely glad to have read this book. I think the following quote from Sam’s point of view captures it perfectly:

“Why was it so hard for him to say he loved her even when she said it to him? He knew he loved her. People who felt far less for each other said “love” all the time, and it didn’t mean a thing. And maybe that was the point. He more than loved Sadie Green. There needed to be another word for it.”

There does need to be another word for it, and I wish there were more books about it. (Or at the very least, more hype for the non-love love stories out there.)

Also: if you’re not into video games, don’t be fooled into avoiding this book — I’m not a video game person, but I feel like I appreciate them, at least a little, after reading Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow!

If you’ve read this book, what did you think of it? (I found it difficult to “rate” since it’s a little outside the norm of what I usually read!)
