Writing Log | Week 3

Day 1 — Sunday

  • For the first time in a while, I’m writing in the morning! It’s Mother’s Day — my husband went out to get my favorite pastries, we just put our son down for his morning nap, and now: I write.

  • Surprise, I’m still working on Chapter 3. This is a key chapter because it’s where our two POV characters meet. There’s key character setup and big hooks in the first two chapters, and because they’re so tightly paced, I need to strike a tricky balance moving forward: fleshing out the world while keeping the pacing consistent. The first two chapters were about 1K words each, and I’m aiming to keep Chapter 3 to 1.5-2K words. I’m currently under 2K, but I need to rework pretty much the entire first half from scratch. The second half is manageable, so I’ve been focusing on tweaks needed there before moving to the new stuff. It’s a backwards approach, but it’s helping me to take the “easy” sections first.

Day 2 — Monday

  • Chapter 3 is currently at 1,985 words… let’s see what more I can cut with a few minutes of editing tonight!

Day 3 — Tuesday

  • Honestly, I’m maybe reviewing a couple of sentences tonight. Currently traveling and catching up with friends and family and work. Sometimes writing comes last!

  • Chapter 3 is broken up into two parts. Part two is currently 1,090 words and I’d like to get it down to under 1K before I go on to tackle Part one, which requires a near re-write.

No more writing done during a hectic work-while-traveling week!
