Moments in Media That Changed Me: Film

Happy Monday! Ever since I saw this tag floating around Bookstagram, I’ve been mulling over my favorite moments in media. I think I might share my music & books moments down the road too, but here are some of the moments in film that live in my mind rent free:

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: “scoundrel” scene

While not the most iconic scene in the Star Wars saga, this is possibly my favorite. Han and Leia’s bantering/bickering/flirting is a model for me as I write tension between characters. Plus… Harrison Ford. Need I say more?

CINDERELLA (2015): the waltz

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I love a good ballgown/ballroom moment and to me, this is the pinnacle. The dress, the prince, the music, the choreography. A stellar moment in a stellar movie (and a character whose goodness and inner strength is so admirable).

RATATOUILLE: ego’s review

I tear up every time I rewatch this scene. Art comes in many forms and from many places, and so do artists. This scene is somehow both rich in the realism of the artist’s struggle and a joyous ode to the underdog.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE (2005): the hand flex

I think this one speaks for itself.

ABOUT TIME: a final walk on the beach

Every time I watch this movie, I come away with a newly remembered appreciation for life’s simple joys and for the people I love.

THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN: sirius & harry’s bond

I have a special place in my heart for Sirius Black and the little family that he and Harry form so beautifully but so briefly. Sirius understands Harry in a way that no one else in the series truly does. “The ones who love us never really leave us” is a central theme in this series and I love that the filmmakers chose to give this line to Sirius (I believe it’s Dumbledore’s in the book).

LITTLE WOMEN (2019): jo writes her book

I’m sure I’m not the only writer here who feels a deep connection to this scene. It captures the creative process with energy and effort and good humor — and conveys how inner struggle can bear great fruit. Sometimes when I feel my creative well run dry, I’ll watch this scene. It never fails to inspire and reenergize me.

What’s a moment in media that changed you? Do we share any of these in common?
